Types of Allergy Medication on the Market
Steve Crooks

Defined Tag:
Many people who suffer from allergies need some form of allergy
medicines for relief from their symptoms. Allergies may cause skin itching and runny nose. The eyes become itchy, watery and very irritated. There is no known cure for
allergies, but there are different types of drugs available, both
prescription and over the counter medication also.

Additional drugs may take
the form of antihistamines, decongestants, a combination of drugs,
allergy shots, and corticosteroids. Antihistamines have been around for many years
and come in the form of liquid, nasal spray, eye drops or tablets.
Nasal sprays may be used during the season, hay fever or allergies
that are difficult for the whole year. Some examples of prescription
antihistamines include Allegra, Clarinex and Zyrtec. Some examples
of over the counter allergy drugs include Benadryl, Tavist and
Claritin.

Decongestants are particularly useful for allergy
medicines to get rid of congestion and can be used in conjunction with
antihistamines for optimal relief from symptoms. They can be purchased
as eye drops or nasal spray and pills or liquid form. Typical
decongestants include Claritin-D and Allegra-D, with over-the-counter ones, Sudafed tablets or liquid, Visine eye drops and
Neo-Synephrine.

This combination of two-in-one drugs, which
contain elements of both an antihistamine, as well as the decongestant.
Work together to get rid of the body of a number of different symptoms,
which occur all at once. There are also a combination of drugs, which
bring together asthma and allergy meds, as well as those that combine
antihistamine eye drops to the mast cell stabilizer. Regulation forms
include Naphcon, Zaditor, Vasocon and Semprex-D, while other types include Tylenol Allergy and Sinus, and
Benadryl Allergy and Sinus.

Steroid drugs known as
corticosteroids work to reduce inflammation, as well as prevention and
treatment of sneezing, itchiness and congestion in conjunction with
nasal problems that cause allergies. Corticosteroids are beneficial to
the swelling and inflammation, which is in conjunction with other
causes in addition to allergies.

Steroids are a form of
allergy medicine that are available in the form of pills as nasal
spray, such as cream or as eye drops. Examples include nasal steroids
and Flonase Nasonex; examples of eye drops containing Alrex and
Dexamethasone while examples of oral steroids are Deltasone (or
prednisone). Inhaled steroids are available only with a doctor
prescription. Some examples of these include Azmacort, Beclovent,
Pulmicort and Flovent. Advair is another form that is a combination of
the steroid and another type of drug to relieve symptoms of asthma.
